SAP PP How to Create and Release Production Order
A Production Order is an instruction for the shop floor to manufacture a specific quantity of a material. It contains all the required information such as:
- The material to be produced
- Quantity
- BOM components
- Routing steps
- Work centers
- Dates and scheduling
- Costs and activities
When we create a production order, we plan the manufacturing. When we release the order, we authorize the shop floor to actually start production.
Prerequisites -
- Material master must have MRP & work scheduling views.
- The Bill of Material must exist for SAP to pull required components into the order.
- Routing must exist.
Here’s a step-by-step to Create and Release Production Order –
Step-1: - Enter the transaction code CO01 in SAP command field and press Enter to continue.

Step-2: - Production Order Create: Initial Screen window appears. Enter the Material and Plant code.

Step-3: - After entering material and plant code, press Enter button.

Step-4: - Production Order Create: Header window appears. Enter the details in the fields Total qty and Scheduling type.

Step-5: - After entering the details, press Enter button. The system will automatically update the BOM and Routing data.

Step-6: - Click the flag symbol on the screen to release the order.

Step-7: - Status bar displays a message as "Release carried out".

Step-8: - Now click on material tab to check material availability, the system displays the message about the availability of components.
It to be note that one may decide not to release the order if there are missing parts found in availability checks.

Step-9: After all processes are completed, click on Save button to save the details.

Step-10: - Status bar displays a message as order number as saved.
