SAP PP What is Product Version

The production version determines which alternative BOM will be used with which task list for producing a material or create a schedule of master production. For a material there will be several production versions for various validity periods and lot size ranges. Generally, a production version maps the BOM with routing and is created for a material from MRP 4 view of material master. A material can have a more than one production versions.

The validity period should be specified while creating a production version. The alternative BOM, BOM usage and routing group number is specified in details part.

Use –

The production versions are useful to define the production process used for planned or production order.

  • It is used in both discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing.
  • This is useful in sales and operations planning, material requirements planning, process order creation and product costing for selecting the most suitable task list and corresponding material list.
  • It is used based on –
    • Lot size quantity
    • Bom explosion dates
    • Based on MRP Group

Structure –

It comprises the following data –

  • The details of the material need to produce such as material number, storage location.
  • The production version general data.

A production version includes -

  • The key, lot-size range and validity.
  • If the production version is locked or not.
  • The date of recent consistency check.
  • The assignment of task lists to production version.

The system differentiates the assignment of following planning levels –

  • Detailed planning -
It determines the master recipe used for material requirements planning, product costing and process order creation.
  • Rate-based planning –
It determines the task list used in repetitive manufacturing. It is not hardly used in process industries.
  • Rough-cut planning –
It determines the rough-cut planning profile used for sales and operations planning. when it is need to create capacity requirements records during rough-cut planning then assign the master recipe rather than rough-cut planning profile.

Co-Products: Special Features –

When manufacturing the co-products the production version is created not only for header material of the recipe and bill of material but also for co-products consisted in BOM as its items.

Based on the material for which a production version is created, the structure will have special features as follows –

  • Production version for header material –
Let to assign an apportionment structure of header material in bills of material data. This structure is copied as a default value to settlement rule of process order.
  • Production versions for BOM items -
It refers to header material production version used in manufacturing of co-product. Note the following carefully –
    • The key of production version for a BOM item should be identical to the corresponding production version of the header material.
    • Rather than bills of material, apportionment structure and recipe, it consists the number of header material it refers to production version.
